The Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant Sets “Planned Evacuation Zone”

Due to its climate and geographical conditions, the area where the annual amount of radioactive fallout may reach over 20 millisievert (mSv) even though it is outside 20-kilometer radius from the Tokyo Electric Power Co. Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant, would be designated as the “planned evacuation zone,” according to the words given by the Chief Cabinet Secretary Edano at the afternoon press conference on April 11th.

The municipalities included in this zone are Katsurao village, Namie town, Iitate village, part of Kawamata town, and Minami-Souma city in Fukushima prefecture.

Edano also commented that the evacuation is “expected to be carried out within a month” and “the actual instructions would be given to the residents based on the regional situations and the results of the consultation with the local government.”

Moreover, Edano stated that the “stay-indoors zone” between 20 to 30 kilometer away from the power plant that was excluded from the “planned evacuation zone” mentioned above, would be determined as the “emergency evacuation prepared zone.”

The municipalities that are in this “emergency evacuation prepared zone” are Hirono town, Naraha town, Kawauchi village, part of Tamura city, and part of Minami-Souma city in Fukushima Prefecture. The day-care centers, kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools in this zone would be closed.
