International Nuclear Events Scale (INES) Level 7

On April 12th the provisional rating for the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was raised to a Level-7. This is up two levels from the Level 5 rating announced on March 18th.
However, this is not due to the recent increase in the amount of radioactive material but a determination made as a result of considering data from the initial stages of the accident. There is no immediate need to expand the evacuation zone due to this recent development.
